Pyrography on Gourds

My love for plants and nature is easily seen in my work as a gourd artist. I was first introduced to the world of gourd art in 1996 when I saw a small gourd with a rabbit wood burned on it. I had never seen anything like it.  The detail and warmth of the piece was amazing to me. I have always worked in one medium or another in art but had not found my calling until I saw that gourd. I combine my love of the Ginkgo tree into my work. The two just seemed to fit so well together. The fanned shape of the Ginkgo leaf and the round, fat bottomed shape of the gourd just really lend themselves to each other. The history of the gourd also has intrigued me. The gourd as a vessel has been used by many civilizations for thousands of centuries. The combination of the utilitarian and the artistic use of the gourd just speak to me. It is something I find very easy to listen to.
